These
guidelines are recommended by the Hoosier Labrador Retriever Club,
Inc., to maintain and promote the standard of Labrador Retrievers and
to encourage the betterment of the breed.
-
Breeding stock should be selected and evaluated as
to all hereditary defects and to promote the outstanding
characteristics outlined by the American Kennel Club standards.
Breeders are encouraged to x-ray all potential breeding stock for hip
and elbow dysplasia, and are further encouraged to have eyes of all
breeding stock examined by a diplomat of the AVCO for hereditary eye
disease. Breeders are encouraged to disclose matings involving
inheritable defects including, but not limited to, monochidism,
cryptorchidism, dysplasia, eye problems and temperament defects.
-
Breeders are encouraged to use limited registration
on dogs sold as pets. Deformed and/or crippled puppies should be
humanely destroyed.
-
Breeders should provide written instructions
regarding the care of the dog, health needs, dates and types of shots
administered and still required; status of the worming program.
Purchaser should be instructed to immediately place the dog under the
care of a veterinarian.
-
Because
the Club deplores the commercialization
of Labradors, dogs are not to be placed with a dealer, broker, or pet
shop.
